Day Sixty-Four
Choosing the Right Path (Read Proverbs 24:1-12)
24 Don't envy evil people
or desire their company.
2 For their hearts plot violence,
and their words always stir up trouble.
3 A house is built by wisdom
and becomes strong through good sense.
4 Through knowledge its rooms are filled
with all sorts of precious riches and valuables.
5 The wise are mightier than the strong,[a]
and those with knowledge grow stronger and stronger.
6 So don't go to war without wise guidance;
victory depends on having many advisers.
7 Wisdom is too lofty for fools.
Among leaders at the city gate, they have nothing to say.
8 A person who plans evil
will get a reputation as a troublemaker.
9 The schemes of a fool are sinful;
everyone detests a mocker.
10 If you fail under pressure,
your strength is too small.
11 Rescue those who are unjustly sentenced to die;
save them as they stagger to their death.
12 Don't excuse yourself by saying, "Look, we didn't know."
For God understands all hearts, and he sees you.
He who guards your soul knows you knew.
He will repay all people as their actions deserve.
"You don't buy evil characters lattes. That's not normal behavior." ~ Rob James-Collier
Reflection:
This passage from Proverbs delivers a powerful message emphasizing the importance of wisdom, integrity, and courage. It warns us not to envy evil people or desire their company, reminding us that although their lives may seem appealing, their hearts are filled with violence and deceit. True strength and success come not from aligning with the wicked but from building our lives on the solid foundation of wisdom and good sense.
The imagery of building a house with wisdom underscores the idea that our choices construct daily lives. Wisdom fills our lives with precious riches—not just material wealth but also the invaluable treasures of peace, joy, and righteousness. In contrast, foolishness leads to emptiness and destruction.
"Nothing is impossible for those who act after wise counsel and careful thought." ~ Thiruvalluvar
The passage also emphasizes the value of wise counsel and the importance of surrounding ourselves with those who can offer guidance and support. In times of conflict or decision-making, victory and success come from seeking the wisdom of many advisers. This action is a call to humility, recognizing that we don't have all the answers and that we need the insights of others to navigate life's challenges.
"Never worry about numbers. Help one person at a time and always start with the person nearest you." ~ Mother Teresa
One of the most compelling parts of this passage is the call to action in verses 11-12: "Rescue those who are unjustly sentenced to die; save them as they stagger to their death." This verse powerfully reminds us that wisdom isn't just about personal success but about using our strength and knowledge to help others, especially those in dire need. We are called to act with courage and compassion, not disregarding injustice but stepping in to make a difference.
"The only thing more dangerous than ignorance is arrogance" ~ Albert Einstein
The final verse is a sobering reminder that we cannot excuse ourselves from responsibility by claiming ignorance. God knows our hearts and sees whether we have acted justly or turned away from those in need. Our actions have consequences, and we will be held accountable for what we do—or fail to do.
