Day Forty

Fool's Paradise (Read Proverbs 15:20-33)

"There are four types of men in this world: 1. The man who knows, and knows that he knows; he is wise, so consult him. 2. The man who knows but doesn't know that he knows; help him not forget what he knows. 3. The man who knows not, and knows that he knows not; teach him. 4. Finally, there is the man who knows not but pretends that he knows; he is a fool, so avoid him." ~ Solomon Ibn Gabirol

Throughout history, the clash between folly and wisdom has captivated philosophers, writers, and individuals. The age-old saying, "Foolishness brings joy to those without sense; a sensible person stays on the right path," summarizes the essence of this struggle. At first glance, the easygoing disposition of the foolish might seem enviable—an approach to life devoid of the heavy considerations that frequently accompany wisdom. However, upon deeper reflection, we find that joy and fulfillment, while quickly coaxed from the folly of ignorance, can be fleeting and superficial, just as any person struggling with an addiction. The delusion that everything is okay is paramount. In contrast, the life of a sensible person, anchored in reason and deliberate choice, may offer less immediate gratification but ultimately leads to a more profound and more enduring sense of purpose and state of joyousness.

Our wisdom teaching thus far has repeatedly emphasized the warnings from a life of foolishness. Obedience to our parents, elders, teachers, spiritual principles, and God himself is paramount if we genuinely want to experience the best life possible on earth and in heaven. Disobedience is the way of a fool; obedience is the pathway to living happy, joyous, and free. When our quest is to manage our own lives and be the God of our lives and those around us, we are headed toward self-destruction and quickly labeled a fool.

20 Sensible children bring joy to their father;
    foolish children despise their mother.

21 Foolishness brings joy to those with no sense;
    a sensible person stays on the right path.

22 Plans go wrong for lack of advice;
    many advisers bring success.

23 Everyone enjoys a fitting reply;
    it is wonderful to say the right thing at the right time!

24 The path of life leads upward for the wise;
    they leave the grave[c] behind.

"The difference between stupidity and genius is that genius has its limits." ~ Albert Einstein

 Wise decisions must maintain a healthy and vibrant lifestyle. This proverb shows the importance of sound judgment and "understanding." The fool follows any urge of desire, and it delights them because they lack the "judgment" to see the folly in it. The one with insight follows a "straight course" and experiences freedom and joy. Knowledge is the foundation of character, and character determines our destiny.

Are you experiencing freedom from the bondage of self? Is joy the foundation of your life, or are you enslaved to sin and plagued by extreme self-centeredness? Are you living foolishly and rightfully earning the title of a fool? Today is a great day to turn from your foolish desires and ways and align your will with God's. This shift in direction will significantly affect how you experience life on earth and for eternity.

May God bless your hearing, understanding, and application of today's wisdom.
