Day Forty-Nine
Two Sides of the Coin (Read Proverbs 18:13-24)
"Wisdom accepts that all things have two sides" ~ Carl Jung
Disputes are inevitable in the tapestry of human interaction, weaving through the fabric of personal relationships, legal systems, and societal beliefs. The age-old proverb underscores the importance of recognizing both sides of any argument or disagreement and is a tender reminder of the complexity inherent in these conflicts. Whether in law, the confines of domestic life, or the landscapes of religious discourse, every dispute embodies multiple perspectives, each deserving consideration and understanding. This principle fosters fair dialogue and enhances the potential for resolution and reconciliation.
In exploring the significance of this proverb, the wisdom teacher reminds us of the necessity of granting a voice to all parties involved, highlighting how doing so can lead to more just outcomes and a deeper understanding of the issues at hand. Through a balanced examination of both sides of the coin, we cultivate an environment where empathy flourishes, injustices are illuminated, and viable peace can emerge.
16 Giving a gift can open doors;
it gives access to important people!
17 The first to speak in court sounds right—
until the cross-examination begins.
18 Flipping a coin can end arguments;
it settles disputes between powerful opponents.
19 An offended friend is harder to win back than a fortified city.
Arguments separate friends like a gate locked with bars.
When was the last time you experienced injustice? When was one party's side of the story taken seriously and yours not? When the situation felt rigged, you never had an equal chance to win the bid, plead your case, or have a right to a fair trial. When mom and dad side with your sibling or your children, play you against your spouse or partner. The time when your team lost the game due to a poor call by the referee, and there was no replay to overturn the call.
We can go on and on with countless examples demonstrating two sides of the coin and how punitive injustice truly is. We live in a culture where systemic injustice claims victims every day. We are all guilty of unfairness, only giving one side of the coin a fair shake. We must reconcile our past and set matters right when we can if we truly wish to become happy, joyous, and free from the bondage of self.
We are in election season and witness two sides of the coin. One politician makes accusations against their opponent, and their opponent makes allegations against them. Which is accurate and which is not? We rarely, if ever, get a thorough or honest portrayal of both sides of the coin, yet we are asked to vote all the same.
"Every truth has two sides; it is as well to look at both before we commit ourselves to either." ~ Aesop
Remember, it's a privilege and your duty if called to be on a jury. Take both sides of the coin seriously and deliver a just verdict. It may be you on trial one day, and who do you want sitting in the jury box, a person who takes both sides of the coin seriously, or binge-watches crime shows?
God is a God of justice, righteousness, and peace. When we act unjustly, we are ungodly and wicked. We can't control all the injustices in the world, but we do have a say-so in responding to both sides of the coin, especially when the coin is in our care, custody, and control. God's hope is we do so with fairness and integrity.
May God bless your hearing, understanding, and application of today's wisdom.
