2025 Jesus-Centered Journey: The Bible in 365 Days
Day 9: Job 6-9 (Job’s Plea and Bildad’s Response)
Theme: Wrestling with Suffering and the Longing for a Mediator
Daily Reading:
Reflection:
In Job 6, Job responds to his friends with raw honesty, expressing the depth of his despair. He cries out, “If my misery could be weighed and my troubles be put on the scales, they would outweigh all the sands of the sea” (Job 6:2-3). Job’s words reflect a heart deeply troubled by suffering and longing for understanding. His plea is not one of rebellion but of desperation to comprehend his circumstances and find relief.
Bildad responds with harsh accusations, suggesting that Job’s children suffered because of their sin and that Job can regain God’s favor through repentance (Job 8:4-6). Bildad’s rigid view of justice oversimplifies suffering, framing it as purely the result of wrongdoing. His words lack compassion and fail to recognize God’s greater purposes.
Job shifts his focus, marveling at God’s greatness and lamenting the gap between God’s perfection and humanity’s frailty. He longs for a mediator, someone who can bridge the divide and plead his case before God. He declares, “If only there were a mediator between us, someone who could bring us together” (Job 9:33). This longing foreshadows Jesus, who serves as our perfect mediator, reconciling us to God through His sacrifice.
Historical Insight:
Early Jewish scholars admired Job’s honesty in expressing his pain while still acknowledging God’s sovereignty. They saw him as a model of faith that wrestles but does not abandon trust.
Christian theologians often connected Job’s longing for a mediator to Christ’s role as the ultimate intercessor. Gregory the Great wrote, “Job foresaw the Mediator who would unite God and humanity, bringing mercy where wrath once ruled.” Augustine emphasized that Christ fulfills Job’s plea, saying, “In Him, we find the one who pleads our cause before the Almighty.”
